OpenLdap - foo foo
[EDIT]
It turns out there is a much better way to achiece what I was trying to do (go figure, I was trying to do things the hard way), libpam-ccreds: see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PamCcredsHowto
[/EDIT]
I have been messing around all weekend (on and off) trying to get something to wor with LDAP. I thought I was getting pretty close, and then come to find out what I wanted to do, I had to wsitch to the "new" config. Pretty much, the documentaiton sucks, and here is the best I could find.
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html
What I want to do is have every system have it's own ldap server that the system would authenticate against, and then the LDAP servers would sync them selfs up, so I would have a commen authentication across all the systems ( there are somewhere around eight systems running here right now, keeping all the acounts in sync is a pain). If I jus thave one LDAP server tha tauth against, then I am going to have problems with the laptops and if that server goes down (my main server system, which this web sites runs on, is not really depenable).
Anyway, grrrrr - I am done with this for the night, and will look at it again some other day, I think the page I linked to has everything I need to get it going.
