Scary List of known carcinogens allowed by the FDA
In the quest of protecting my family from the saturation of
everyday toxins, here is some info on known carcinogens in products
that most likely every household has:
1. Yellow #5 - found in many food items, from pickles to dry
pudding mix. A known carcinogen that has been banned by the rest of
the civilized world, but the United States Food and Drug
Administration has decided to continue to allow. Read the ingredients
list on all food items that you buy if you would like to avoid it.
Good luck finding yellow #5 free pickles. ( I heard this on NPR)
2. Oxybenzone - a common ingredient in many cosmetics,
especially sunscreen. Known to actually increase the UV ray
penetration in the skin. Nothing like trying to protect our skin from
cancer by applying a carcinogenic sunscreen on it! Bert's Bees has a
oxybenzone-free sunscreen. Cheapest I have seen it is at Walmart,
$14. Google oxybenzone for more info and to find other brands that
steer away from it. Also, go to cosmeticsdatabase.com for info and
ratings of thousands of cosmetics. The site and all oxybenzone info
was given to me by my dear friend Carrie, a passionate advocate for
green living.
3. Food-grade formaldehyde - I ran across this info while
trying to research the safety of bamboo cutting boards when cutting
meat. I was excited to receive 2 beautiful bamboo cutting boards for
mother's day - bamboo is a easily renewable recourse, harder than
maple. What a winner. Come to find out, some bamboo boards are glued
together with formaldehyde, also a known carcinogen. (Also, some
manufacturers cut down forests to put in a bamboo plantation, so look
out for that too.) Food-grade formaldehyde has been banned by all
countries of the European Union and Canada; again - FDA doesn't think
it's a big deal. If you are looking for a non-toxic bamboo board,
check out this link:
http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/ask/cuttingboards .
And yes, it's OK to cut meat on your bamboo board, but might want to
designate one side for meat and one side for produce (use stickers or
engrave a letter on each side).
Hope this list will never grow longer.
